What I do when I am not framing… I make images by combining digital and traditional media. Currently, I’m working on a series of posters that combine nonsensical mechanical Sharpie drawings with halftone photographs. I’m also a published illustrator.
The coolest thing I’ve ever framed was… a monochromatic Diego Rivera stone lithograph. His economic use of line to define mass made the image glow. And to this day that drawing continues to influence the marks I make on a computer and paper.
The coolest person I ever framed for was… It’s not really a person, but when I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut. So when the chance to work with the Museum of Flight presented itself I was thrilled. I framed a Gemini mission flag along with signatures from the crew. Literally handling a piece of aeronautic history was such a neat experience.
My favorite artist or medium is… all things printmaking and photography. I also enjoy Pop art and Pop Surrealism. Lately I’ve been intrigued by new glass art. Call it nepotism, but the work my brother is doing with glass at the University of Washington is new and fresh. Glass is making a nice move from Craft to a material for conceptual manipulation.
Why I love my job… It’s a great mix of collaborative design, craftsmanship, merchandising, and interacting with a diverse community of clients who enjoy their art and memorabilia.
My best design advice… Believe in your own personal tastes and esthetics.
